Less is More; Pieces for four percussionists
Inspired by the mission of the Maison Maillou, which was home to the British army’s quartermaster’s office and treasury as early as 1815, and, since 1959, has housed the Quebec Chamber of Commerce, this concert features musical works that showcase an extraordinary economy of means.
Composers of all eras have aimed to make sparse use of musical material in their work. From the 1960s onwards, some have taken this idea to extremes, creating a musical trend that has had a huge impact on today’s music. Similar to the mission of Maison Maillou, composers like Reich, Glass and Southam have sparked important reflections on minimalism in music and the arts.
